How to get there From Bovec (447m) in Slovenia this is an oustanding and long climb! If you come from Italy via Passo del Predil/Predel (1156m) a tarmacced road soon takes off (1094m) up the Mangart road. It is the highest paved road in Slovenia and is quite nice and very scenic. It is also somewhat steep (particularly at one place lower down where they have rebuilt the road without a serpentine probably in place there earlier (20% here shortly)). The circle road at the top was asphalted sometime around 2005. Near the highest point of the circle road (2050m) you can strike slightly left up the grassy side for ca. 50m to reach the pass here. (The photo is taken more straight up from the highest point – watch out so you do not go to far straight up here as it is free fall without barrier for something like 600m straight down.) If coming from Italy the climb truly starts by the Lago del Predil (968m) if coming from Sella Nevea/Nevee/Na Žlebeh/Neveasattel (1189m) or north up at Tarvisio/Tarvis (709m).
Other comments There is no way you will be able to get down into Italy by using this pass – it is strictly only for people climbing passes on all four. There are very nice views all the way up, especially in the higher regions. There are a couple of unproblematic tunnels. There is a guard before the last tunnel (probably a toll booth for cars). One could possibly also walk up (ca. 600m) to the Forcella Màngartu (2166m) toward the Mangart mountain (the highest one up here).
